Meet Dick and Annie! Dick and Annie are some of our newest members
and some of our most spirited. Their positive attitudes mixed with jokes of “succumbing” and “needing an AED”, they bring a great energy to every class they come to. Here’s a little bit more about Annie and Dick!
What made you choose CFL to meet your fitness goals over other gyms in the area?
D: Annie did cross-fit in Billings and really enjoyed it, and showed progress, so we decided to continue it...having failed at self-directed workouts (we need supervision and a taskmaster).
A: I have previously joined a cross fit gym in Billings and have enjoyed the short intense workout that fit my busy schedule at the time. I can go in everyday after work and come home still energized. So, when we moved back to Livingston and learned that CFL has opened, we immediately signed up.
What is your favorite thing(s) about working out at CFL?
D: Very helpful staff and friendly non-competitive atmosphere. Everyone supports each other no matter what their level.
A: The staff are very helpful and patient with us and members are supportive of each other.
Has your experience working out at CFL been different in any way from experiences you’ve had at prior facilities?
D: I have always worked out alone (or not at all).
A: So far, my experience with cross fit gyms in Billings and here in Livingston have been similar: both have staff that are patient and helpful, as well as, members that are supportive and who encourage each other.
What motivates you to stay so consistent with your workouts?
D: Impending old age and dependency, plus we are retired and have no other reason to get out of bed in the morning. We are trying to stay fit to share some time with our new grandchild and of course our children and their spouses.
A: I love to play. Cross fit workouts are adult versions of child play. As a child, I ran, jumped, climbed trees, etc. I played my heart out every day so much that I always felt sad when the sun went down because it meant it was time for me to go home and my day of play had ended. Then I grew up. As an adult with a full time job, full time mother, etc. time for play became scarce. I stopped play for many years. During that time, my physical activities declined and I fell into a sedentary life. It reached a point when I realized that I could no longer run, jump, or climb trees comfortably. When I joined cross fit, I found that daily activities in warm-ups and WODs have foundation on games I played as a child. In cross fit, you can do the drunken ostrich walk, the duck walk, crab walk, inchworm, jump rope, hang on bars, spin a bike, or row boats. Like I said earlier, I love to play so much that when I get into my car to drive home after a workout, I have the desire to go back and repeat another session for the day.
What fitness goals do you have for yourself going forward?
D: The Bee-Gees said it: Staying Alive...and independent, out of the nursing home. I want to continue to hike and ski as long as I can.
A: Now at 70 years old and retired, I want to regain the muscle memory I used for play as I child. I want to feel strong. This is particularly important at my age. I want to be strong enough not to fall or better yet, be strong enough to stand up on my own after a fall.
What do you like to do when you’re not working out at CFL?
D: Recover. We do a lot of work on our 3.5 acres, float and fish, read, hike, ski, eat Annie is a great cook...the best meals in Livingston are at our house), sleep, and sit and watch the river flow by and the seasons change.
A:During the day, I like to work outside pruning trees, gardening, tending plants. At night, I like to look at the stars. I also like to fly fish. Right now, I am learning to row a river boat. I love to travel as well.
What would you name the autobiography of your life?
D: Life Without a Plan… Annie’s is probably Why Did I Marry That Crazy Man?
A: The Wanderer
What is the last good book you read?
D: Lonesome Dove
A: The Game of Thrones
Do you prefer cardio or strength training?
D: Strength though I like them both.
A: Both.
What is your beverage of choice after working out?
D: Gatorade
A: Water
What does your perfect day look like?
D: Spending time outdoors doing things with our family, e.g. 4 days hiking in the Wind Rivers, traveling in Croatia and Slovenia, and traveling anywhere with Annie.
A: I love sunny days in Montana where I can be outside and spend time with my husband Richard.
What is your favorite kind of music (or musical artists) to listen to when you work out?
D: I am focusing on the exercises, not listening to the music. Anything but rap.
A: No favorites
